Climate Change and African Business Risk: Building Insurance Resilience for 2030

Climate volatility is no longer a projection in African risk registers; it is a line item in loss histories. Drought cycles are compressing in East Africa, flood return periods are shortening in West African coastal cities, and tropical cyclone exposure in the southeast has produced some of the continent's costliest insured events. The insurance market is responding the way markets do: with price, with deductibles, and in some cases with withdrawal of capacity.

The insurability question

The strategic risk for corporates is not this year's premium increase. It is the possibility that certain assets, in certain locations, become hard to insure at all. Boards should be asking a simple question: which of our sites would we struggle to insure in 2030, and what are we doing about it now? Answering it requires location-level exposure data, something many African corporates have never compiled.

What resilient programs look like

First, they are built on real data: flood mapping, drainage assessments, and site surveys rather than postcode assumptions, because good data routinely wins better terms than the market average. Second, they use structure deliberately: higher retentions on modelled perils, parametric covers where traditional indemnity is slow or unavailable, and business interruption reviewed against realistic climate scenarios rather than historical averages. Third, they treat risk improvement as capital investment, with flood defences, fire protection, and backup utilities justified by both reduced losses and preserved insurability.
